How to Prepare for a Family Photography Session

Let’s be honest, getting your family in front of the camera can feel like a lot. You're probably thinking about outfits, timing, naps, snacks, and wondering if your little wildlings will even play along.

First off: I see you. And I want you to know, it doesn’t have to be stressful.

My family sessions are built around the idea that kids will be kids; curious, playful, unpredictable, and full of personality. That’s not something we need to work around, it’s something we embrace.

So here’s how to prepare for your session in a way that keeps things calm, enjoyable, and real with space for who your family actually is.

1. Let go of the “perfect photo”

Perfection doesn’t live in still smiles and stiff poses. It lives in the way your little one reaches for your hand. The way you all lean into each other during a pause. The belly laughs, the snack breaks, the cuddles in between. Trust that your family, just as you are, is more than enough. That’s where the real beauty lives, and that’s exactly what I’m there to capture.

2. Let them be themselves

Kids don’t need to follow a script to create beautiful images. In fact, the more freedom they have to explore and play, the more relaxed and authentic your photos will feel. If your child wants to hold my hand, lead the way, or collect rocks while we walk, that’s perfect.Get down on their level and let them lead the way. Whether they’re racing ahead, stopping to smell the flowers, or needing a moment to just be, that’s where the real stories live. And I’ll be right there with you — gently capturing it all as it unfolds.

3. Bring the snacks (and the wipes!)

Pack a few easy, mess-free snacks that won’t stain mouths or hands, things like crackers, berries, or dried fruit. Snacks are a great way to reset energy and keep spirits high, especially for younger kids. And yes, baby wipes are a must. You’ll thank yourself later.

4. Dress for comfort, not stress

There’s no pressure to shop for matching outfits or dress your kids in anything fussy. Choose clothes they feel good in and that reflect who they are. Layers, textures, and earthy tones photograph beautifully, but most importantly, your family should feel comfortable. Once you're booked, I’ll send you a styling guide and help you figure it out. I’ve got you.

5. Set the day up for success

A slow start to the day can make all the difference. Make sure everyone gets plenty of rest leading into the session. Save that beautiful energy for me.

If it helps set the tone, plan something lovely after our session like a café breakfast or a dinner out. It’s the perfect way to mark the moment, and your kids will associate the day with joy and connection, not just photo day.

Final thoughts…

I’ve spent over 15 years working with children in aquatic education, fitness and coaching roles. Those years have taught me how to build trust, read the room, and move gently. Your kids don’t need to be anything but themselves and neither do you. By the end of our session, I’ll likely be playing tag with your little ones, or they’ll be holding my hand back to the car. Sometimes, they’re even asking where Aunty Riz is on the way home. So take a deep breath. You don’t need to do or fix anything. I’ll be there to gently guide, support, and hold space for what’s already unfolding, a moment in time, just as it is.
